Local business going all-in on New Mexico tax-free weekend

Sport Systems is making all items tax-free for the state’s tax-free weekend.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — July 25-27 is Tax-Free Weekend in New Mexico which means this is the weekend to stock up on certain items, even if you’re not going back to school.

You have until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, to stock up on thousands of qualifying items without paying the sales tax. One business is even go all-in on the weekend – Sport Systems in northeast Albuquerque is making the entire store tax-free.

“We wanted to make it simple and easy and save some people some money,” said Duane Kinsley, the owner of Sport Systems. “We have used bikes that are really popular with with the sale, because kids want to ride a bike to school. They don’t want to buy a new one maybe. We just want to give our customers a little extra break.”

At other stores, tax-free weekend only applies to certain items:

  • Clothing and shoes under $100
  • Computers and tablets $1,000
  • All the standard school supplies
    • Notebooks, backpacks, pencils, etc

The National Retail Federation found nearly two-thirds of all U.S. families are planning to get their back-to-school shopping done early. They attribute that to rising inflation costs and President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Families with grade-school students are expected to spend, on average, $858 on clothing and school supplies this year.

Matias Fontela, an economics professor with the University of New Mexico, suggests it’s better to get shopping done early before prices rise even more.

“We don’t know about the future. We don’t have a crystal ball but I don’t think prices may go down. I think prices have a trend and they keep going up. If you can afford it and you can purchase things this weekend, that might be the best opportunity,” Fontela said.

The tax-free weekend goes through Sunday at 11:59 p.m.
